Teeth Whitening vs. Veneers

Sep 3 • 2 minute read

Our teeth are important for more than just eating - they give us confidence and are an important part of how we look. Not everyone has perfect teeth, however, and through normal wear and tear our teeth can collect chips, cracks, and stains. Dentists offer many solutions to these imperfections, and Ontario River Dental, for example, offers both veneers and dental implants to improve the beauty of your dentition. Between these two, the question is, which option is right for you? It’s important to ask your Corona dentist about your dental improvement choices before making a decision.

Teeth Whitening – For many, this is a great option to restore a clean shine to the teeth without breaking the bank. Available as take-home trays from the store, or custom trays from Zoom!®, these allow individuals to whiten their teeth and see fast results. Teeth whitening works by safely bleaching the surfaces of your teeth and therefore eliminating stains and discoloration. This method is best for individuals who want a simple, easy way to enhance the look of their smile. It requires no invasive surgery or anesthetic, but is long-lasting and treats each tooth simultaneously. Teeth whitening may require repeated treatments to ensure stains do not return, like Zoom! Weekender, but it is an easy and infrequent process.

Porcelain Veneers – Teeth that have more severe damage, like cracks or stains, may require more coverage than teeth whitening provides. As long as your teeth do not require a crown or a procedure to correct your teeth, then veneers could be the right choice for you. Made from porcelain, these are beautiful coverings for your teeth that look natural and last for many years, with a good regimen of cleaning and flossing.

If you and your dentist decide porcelain veneers are right for you, then they will remove a thin layer of enamel. The dentists do this so the veneers look like your natural teeth, otherwise, your mouth would look too full, and bulky. The porcelain veneers are then affixed to your teeth with a strong adhesive, and become, for all intents and purposes, your new teeth. Although these fixtures are made of strong porcelain, they are not invincible and must be treated with care just like natural teeth; in the same instance, they are stain resistant, but not perfect.

How to Choose Between Teeth Whitening or Veneers

The first step in this process is to consult your dentist and see what measures can be taken to improve the look of your smile. Sometimes you can just do something different in your dental care regimen that will drastically improve the look of your smile, without turning to the aforementioned procedures. Ultimately what a dentist will examine is the health of your dentition, and how intense your imperfections are. A dentist will first understand what you want for your teeth and then seek to join possible procedure options with your smile goals.
